2-2 · Memorize the Fretboard: A

Do for A what Module 1 did for E. Anchor a few A notes from the open strings and octave shapes, then find the rest all over the neck — and notice the payoff: the full pattern of A notes is the exact same shape as the E pattern, just shifted five frets. Drill it with the same exercises until an A lights up wherever your hand lands.

What follows is this lesson’s section of the Course Guide — you can read it here or in the full guide →

No Memorize boxes in this lesson

In this module, your goal is to learn the positions of all of the A notes on the fretboard.

E A D G B e 3 5 7 9 12 15 17 19 21 A A A A A A A A A A A A

The pattern for A is exactly the same as the pattern for E, except that it is shifted up five frets (or down seven frets). This exact pattern will hold for every note on the fretboard, so it’s worth noticing the overall shape. Here they are side by side:

E A D G B e 3 5 7 9 12 15 17 19 21 A A A A A A A A A A A A
E A D G B e 3 5 7 9 12 15 17 19 21 E E E E E E E E E E E E

Exercise: To practice this, use the same exercises you used in Module 1 to learn the E notes.
