My new favorite ear-training app

Originally published November 15, 2025

Most ear-training apps are not worth your time. Max Konyi's Sonofield Ear Trainer is the first one I’ve found that genuinely builds a useful skill for guitarists. I'm currently working my way through the "Master" difficulty level, which is quite challenging!

In this video, I talk about why ear training is valuable, why most ear training apps are garbage, and how to use this app.

The bottom line for me is that this app is really well designed, and the free version offers a ton of value. After a few hours of use, I bought the "Pro" in-app purchase, which lets you change the instrument sound among other things. I recommend checking it out (link includes a 20% discount for Fret Science subscribers).
