Stuck in the Box 09: Jon Finn on learning to improvise

Originally published June 24, 2026

Stuck in the Box is a new series of podcast-style conversations with great guitar music teachers.

Jon Finn has taught guitar at Berklee College of Music for nearly four decades, and he has had a monumental influence on my understanding of the guitar fretboard through his groundbreaking book, Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation. They say "never meet your heroes," but Jon is as humble and warm as they come, and I'm excited to share our full conversation. You can find more from Jon at MelBay.com, TrueFire.com, YouTube, and Bandcamp.
